The Society for the Conservation of Philippines Wetlands, Inc (SCPW) facilitated the visit of representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Yale University to the Paligui Wetlands in Candaba, Pampanga, on April 10, 2024. The visit was in line with the Asia and the Pacific Food Security Forum 2024 and the Regional Flyway Initiative (RFI).

The team was warmly welcomed by SCPW members and officials of the Macagatal Irrigators Association. The activities on-site included a briefing by Ms. Amy Lecciones, Executive Director of SCPW, about the Candaba Wetlands and SCPW’s initiatives in the watershed, including the Tree-preneur Project in Mt. Arayat Protected Landscape and the establishment of Sustainable Farm Tourism (Frontrunner Initiative ) under the Living Lakes, Biodiversity, and Climate Project (LLBCP). The team also had the opportunity to meet and greet with local farmers and engage in wetland walk, birdwatching, and carabao cart ride.

Additionally, the team had a courtesy call with the Barangay Paligui Local Government, Hon. Randy A. Manio, Punong Barangay. ADB expressed their thanks for the warm welcome and facilitation of their visit, and expressed interest in exploring potential partnerships with SCPW, the Local Government Unit, and community regarding biodiversity conservation, protection of migratory birds, and sustainable livelihoods such as farm tourism. Kap. Manio expressed his support and interest in the possible opportunities and partnerships for the Paligui Wetlands and local community as a whole.
